Humans are … Boring.

Let’s be honest. We’re all human, and humans are boring, mundane, ordinary. I’m human every day. When I want to escape from reality, I don’t want to see the things I see all the time in my ordinary life. I want excitement. I want variety. I don’t want to think about paying bills, fixing my vehicle, or people getting ill.

That’s probably why I don’t play a human in RPG’s or TTRPG’s. Nah. Give me a dwarf cleric with a battlehammer and let me go smash that guy over there. Or maybe an elf wizard who can cast a fireball big enough to fry the enemy without getting within its reach.

Today’s topic, however, is humans. More specifically, the non-magical humans living in the world I’ve created. Now, the deity that created humans didn’t make them magicless on purpose. She simply forgot to include the organ system that allows creatures to access the essence of magic in the blueprint for the species. Oops, her bad.

She did work with another deity to create a workaround for humans to access the aether (the word for magic) after her oversight was pointed out. The fact that no one told the humans there is a workaround, or what it is, well, they’ll figure it out. Right? Sure, they will. Eventually. The fact that their lifespan isn’t long enough for them to figure it out isn’t her fault. Okay, maybe it is. But, she’s got other deific things to worry about. Like what, you ask? You wouldn’t understand; You’re not a goddess. And humans figuring out how they can access the aether is the basic plot of the first book in the series.

Back to the humans: They have no magic. Therefore, they are the lowest creatures on the planet. Their lives are hard. The world is harsh. And they suffer. Humans don’t intermingle with other species of creatures. They form villages, towns, and cities far away from any other sentient species. And when humans move into a new territory, the current occupants leave in droves. There are some other creatures (think elves, fey, and dragons) who return secretly, trying to assuage their curiosity. They do not do so openly, however.

Humans have become militaristic and almost feral. Some traditions were created in response to the harsh realities of the world they live in. When a child becomes a teenager, he or she is expected to assume more responsibilities and duties in society. As they age, the duties increase in number and difficulty. And I should stop there before I begin telling you the actual story. LOL

So, as you can see, humans in our world are boring. I’m trying to make them less so in my world. Only time will tell if I’m successful. What should my next topic be? Hmmm, I’ll ponder and let you know. Until next time!
